SPICE TOUR and JOZANI FOREST in ZANZIBAR – FULL DAY
SPICE TOUR
Discover new spicy smells, tastes and textures: from the punch of the chilli to the juiciness of coconut flesh. You will be taken on a soft walking track of trees and herbs in the countryside – seeing, smelling and tasting the variety of spices, herbs and mouth watering tropical seasonal fruits including jack fruit, pineapple, green coconut and many others.
After the abolition of the slave trade, Zanzibar was one of the worlds’ reputed and most important producers of spices. Today, Zanzibar is still well-known for its clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, chilli and pepper. The Spice Route is a unique opportunity to see and buy them at source.
As you will discover, spices are woven into the very fabric of culture and everyday life in Zanzibar. Their pungent wafts and zingy tastes, organic colours and textures weave magic, tantalising the senses. A visit to a local spice farm means viewing and learning about the plants and spices that are grown here.
JOZANI FOREST
Jozani or Josani Forest is part of the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, a 50 Km2 National Park located on Zanzibar island thriving with a wealth of native wildlife in diverse forms – from swamp forest to evergreen thicket and mangrove. It is the only national park in Zanzibar. This forest is inhabited by the Zanzibar Red Colobus, an endemic monkey species that exists only in Zanzibar.
In this sanctuary, you can spend a couple of hours wandering amidst the exotic vegetation, closely sight the indigenous flora and approach the Red Colobus monkeys. Good-natured and good-humoured, they allow visitors to get close to them as they frolick playfully around.
