Dear travellers, this package is designed to learn about the Northern Lights, the Arctic sky and the cosmos from our experts on board. Of course that we have various excursions on Coastal Norway that you can choose from. We sail this voyage on MS Trollfjord and MS Finnmarken ships from Bergen up to the Arctic in the north at Kirkenes and back to Bergen. It can be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the spectacular and unique Northern Lights and to learn more about them and about the solar system and the Arctic region.
Day 1: Embarkation in Bergen
Welcome to Bergen, NORWAY. If you choose not to arrange the flights and transfers through us, please arrive in Bergen as early as possible to have time to explore this beautiful city before boarding the ship. Bergen is the cultural gateway to the fjords and where the hunt for the Northern Lights begins. Relax and meet your expert astronomers, the rest of the staff and make new friends interested in astronomy and the solar system.
Day 2: Art Nouveau day: Florø - Molde
Wake up early the next day to be rewarded with unforgettable views of the beauty of Nordfjord. After, enjoy a delicious breakfast as we sail passing the West Cape and through pristine skerries. Soon enough the ship arrives in Ålesund. This famous town for the Art Noveau architecture is a must see. We have various optional excursions and you have an opportunity to go explore this pretty town.
Day 3: A visit to Trondheim, the Royal City: Kristiansund - Rørvik
As we sail further north in our Sky-watching Astronomy Voyage, we will reach the medieval city of Trondheim. Several optional excursions and activities are available. You get the chance to explore this old Viking city, whose colourful history is reflected in the Bakklandet quarter, the beautiful medieval architecture and the gothic-style Nidaros Cathedral.
Day 4: Welcome to the Arctic Circle and Lofoten Islands: Brønnøysund - Svolvær
Today we officially enter the Arctic Circle and the Auroral Zone as we pass the invisible line situated at 66 degrees 33 minutes north marking the border to the Arctic Region. Crossing the Arctic Circle this will be the best area to admire the Northern Lights. There is also a ceremony on dock to mark this moment. The ship then continues to the modern city of Bodø. Let’s not forget the beauty of Lofoten Islands. You will get the chance to see them and their capital, Svolvær and to choose one of the optional excursions.
Day 5: Enrich your Northern Lights knowledge: Stokmarknes - Skjervøy
This is one of the most important days from your Sky-watching Astronomy Voyage as we will arrive in Tromsø after a relaxing morning on board.This day also keep your eyes opened and search the skies for the Northern Lights. Tromsø is the Capital of Arctic Norway. Here, we will visit the Planetarium at the Science Centre with an impressive show that is included especially for this tour.
Day 6: Northern Lights and North Cape: Øksfjord - Berlevåg
In the early morning we make a short stop at Hammerfest before arriving in Honningsvåg, the gateway to the North Cape. This breathtaking place is possible through one of our optional excursions. Don’t miss the wonders of spectacular North Cape.
Day 7: On top of Europe: Båtsfjord - Kirkenes - Berlevåg
This is the day when we will reach the top of Europe and the city of Kirkenes, just few miles away from the Russian border. The landscape and sea views become more dramatic we are approaching Kirkenes. The brightness of the Aurora Borealis is usually perfect around this small town. This is also the place where our ship turns back following its south course this time. But before that, why not enjoying one of our optional excursions and activities? As you return south the northbound ports visited by night are now seen by day.
Day 8: Historical Hammerfest: Mehamn - Tromsø
After deparing from the extreme north, we pass through Mehamn and then to Hammerfest before reaching Tromsø in the evening. The city of Hammerfest is the world’s most northerly town where you get the chance to join some of our optional excursions and activities. After an enjoyable day far in the north in this historic city, the ship will continue to Tromsø where we get at night in time for stargazing or for an optional visit with concert at the Arctic Cathedral.
Day 9: Beautiful Lofoten Islands: Tromsø - Stamsund
After we depart from Tromsø, we will have a day with spectacular views over the steep mountains, deep fjords and charming fishing villages. We will pass through the legendary and beautiful Lofoten Islands and Vesteralen enjoying the breathtaking scenery. You can’t really miss this day full of amazing places as the ship sail through a network of islands. This is one of the most beautiful parts of your journey south and of the Norwegian Coast.
Day 10: Seven Sisters: Bodø - Rørvik
This is the day when we leave the Arctic Circle at 66°33’N. We celebrate this moment with a special ritual out on deck by tasting a spoonful of cod liver oil, an Arctic tradition. We sail along famous peaks of the Seven Sisters and Torghatten Mountain on the Helgeland Coast. Again, this day as on every day of your voyage, there is the possibility of optional excursions and activities. You can pre-book them with us.
Day 11: Charming coastal towns: Trondheim - Ålesund
Today there’s another chance to explore the royal city of Trondheim, rich in medieval history. We arrive early morning to have time to visit the city one more time. Then we sail to Kristiansund, Norway’s “cured cod” capital. Why not visiting this city as well?
Day 12: The fairytale voyage ends: Bergen
This is the last day of the voyage, but before we get back to Bergen, you can still admire the dramatic scenery. A few nautical miles are left and your Sky-watching Astronomy Voyage draws to a close. Depending on the flight schedule you might have some time left to do a walking tour in Bergen and visit the old Bryggen quarter and not only. Sky-watching Astronomy Voyage is a 12 days voyage on the West and North Coast of Norway. Flights from any International Airport in the world and transfers are not included and can be arranged at an extra cost. You can enquire with us about this.
Every day from the voyage along the Norwegian coast, provided by our partners, promises magnificent landscape, charming cultures and optional shore excursions full of adventure. This voyage is only available on certain dates between end of September and end of March. The highlights on your voyage will be the lectures from our expert astronomers about the mesmering Northern Lights, about the Arctic sky and the solar system but not only. A visit to the Planetarium at the Science Centre from Tromsø on the 5th day is also included. Here you can enjoy an impressive show about the Arctic polar sky, about the constellations and not to forget, the Aurora Borealis. But the voyage itself is a memorable experience. Our ships have value for money and comfortable cabins, plenty facilities to choose from, fresh food from local ingredients and expert guidance. We have a special team on board of each ship that will be checking the night skies announcing any sights of the Lights.

One of our three expert astronomers and a Tour Manager will be on board with you for this voyage. Either you choose to go on a MS Trollfjord or a MS Finnmarken voyage, one renowened astronomer from Dr. John Mason, Ian Ridpath or Graham Bryant will be with you. If you are interested in one of them, you can ask us about the dates they will be present on board.
Dr. John Mason has a main interest in Astronomy, Space Technology and Astrophysics. He is part from the Royal Astronomical Society, Principal lecturer at the South Downs Planetarium and a member of the International Astronomical Union.
Ian Ridpath has a special interest in writing and broadcasting about astronomy. Working in the past at the University of London Observatory, he is also part of the Royal Astronomical Society and a member of the Society of Authors and of the Association of British Science Writers. He is also the editor of Star Atlas and Oxford Dictionary of Astronomy.
Graham Bryant has also a particular interest in astronomy and is the chairman of the Clanfield Observatory in Hampshire. Also being part of the Royal Astronomical Society, he is also presenter at the South Downs Planetarium and a mentor at the Portsmouth University.

All the ships that are used in the Norway Voyages have beautiful and large lounges where you gather around for a chatting session or to listen to the lectures, 2 or 3 restaurants, cafes and/or bakeries and at least one bar to enjoy a drink. The immense outdoor desks are impressive and it is the place where you can enjoy the landscape, the fjords and Northern Lights during winter at their best. Nordic hospitality and amenities are highlighted on these ships and facilities like gym/fitness room, jacuzzi/hot tub, sauna or even pool are popular on many of the ships used on Norway Voyages.
