From the town centre it’s easy to grab the CityXpress gondola up the Schmittenhöhe. Because here you will find wide, scenic pistes, a variety of different skiing levels and plenty of mountain huts. On the shores of the Lake Zell with the beautiful Hohe Tauern National Park, Zell am See is a great ski resort, especially the tree-lined runs that dominate the lower part of the mountain. Moreover, thanks to its friendly slopes, a traffic-free centre and plenty of non-ski activities, Zell am See is a great choice for families and intermediate skiers. In addition, if you need a break from skiing, you can try plenty of activities including snowshoeing, cross-country and Nordic walking.

Skiing activities in Zell am See

Skiing in Kaprun region is famous for alpine skiing and snowboarding and boasts 62 slopes stretching over 138 kilometres. Above all, the presence of the glacier ensures very high snow-probability throughout the winter in this skiing area.

Cross-country skiing can be practised on a 40 km network trails. All the trails are perfectly prepared daily as both classic and skating tracks. The Schmitten high-altitude trail and the route located at 3,000 m on the Kitzsteinhorn are particularly attractive.

Other activities in Zell am See

Try the Tobogganing and you can enjoy a rapid descent down. There is the 1.5 km long Köhlergraben toboggan run and another of 2 km, the Guggenbichlbahn. Both runs are illuminated in the evening.

Ice skating can be fun for all your family! If the temperatures in winter remain below zero for a longer period, a layer of ice forms on Lake Zell. This would be is perfect for ice skating, a fun winter activity for young and old alike. If the ice isn’t thick enough, the ice rink in Zell am See is a wonderful alternative.

Summer activities in Zell am See

Mountain biking in Kaprun cycling region has countless routes for every level of ability. Many of the routes start directly from the Guesthouse Schmittental, which also has a lockable cycle garage. If you enjoy the feeling of the wind blowing through your hair, then find your favourite route along the 1,300 km long network of cycle paths in Zell am See.

Swimming in the crystal clear and blue waters of Lake Zell, invites you to cool off on a hot day with a wonderfully fresh swimming. The water of the natural lake reaches approx. 23° C. In addition, not only it offers the most enjoyable swimming pleasure, it is also ideal for pedal boating, sailing, windsurfing and water-skiing.

Hiking in this area on the trails are easy, not too steep in most cases and lead you to stunning viewpoints. It does not matter if you prefer easy hiking trails or medium tours with fantastic views on the surrounding peaks. On the Schmitten everyone will find a perfect hiking tour to explore the Alpine destination.

Paragliding season starts around May. The wide-ranging meadows all around the summit provide pilots lots of elbow room to spread out their equipment and prepare for the launch. Will you try it?

Fishing on Lake Zell am See can be a really nice experience. Whitefish, pike, perch and other species can be caught easily if you like this activity. You can practice your fishing skills here from April to November.
