Historic attractions in Santorini
Start with the Archaeological site Akrotiri known also as “Minoic Pompeii”. The city of Akrotiri was destroyed by a volcanic explosion in 1500 BC. The city is discovered only in 1860 when the workers gathered the debris to build the Suez Canal. Here, you and other visitors will make an idea of how life was in Santorini in the Bronze Age.
Visit the museum of Prehistoric Thera located in the capital of Fira. The museum is the most important cultural attraction in Santorini. Look here for the treasures discovered on the Akrotiri site, including colourful frescoes. Above all, a representation of the women who harvested saffron, gives an idea of the life of that age.
