Historic attractions in Prague

Don’t miss the Old Town Square this architectural wonder with many buildings in different styles. For example, have a snack or coffee while you admire the Astronomical Clock, St. Nicholas Cathedral and others. Moreover, this place is full of colours, full of life and always busy. The new town is also interesting with many modern buildings and shops.

Walk back in time on the Charles Bridge crossing Vltava River. Most importantly, it is the oldest bridge in the city and a truly historic monument. It is ornate with 30 statues in baroque styles, lamps and Gothic towers, being the perfect place for an evening walk.

After that watch the astronomical clock found in the centre of the historic city. Built in 1410 it is the oldest medieval clock that still works. Near the fixed hour, 12 apostles walk over the top dial while displaying the position of the Sun and the Moon. Moreover, the lower dial displays the name of the saint celebrated on that day and the astrological signs.

Prague Castle dates back to the 9th century and is now home to the president’s office. The fortress surrounding the castle is made up of several fortified walls, interior courtyards and other old buildings. You must know that the castle entered the book of records as the world’s largest ancient castle.

While in the castle, visit Saint Vitus Cathedral in Gothic style. Admire the impressive architecture, because is the most important church in the Czech Republic. Its construction lasted 525 years. Above all, the main attractions which you should visit are the southern mosaic, the two-dial tower and the interior rich in sculptures, paintings and works of art.

The Jewish Quarter (Josefov) shows to visitors the multiculturalism of the city in the fascinating Jewish neighbourhood. On one hand, here you can visit the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, the Great Synagogue or the Jewish Town Hall. On the other hand visit the Spanish Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, the Rudolfinum and many other buildings in the Jewish architecture. Petřín Lookout Tower can be seen from almost any location of the city. The tower was built as a mini version of Paris’s Eiffel Tower in 1891 for the Jubilee Exhibition. The construction was a point of observation and transmission and is now an important tourist destination with an incredible view. The tower is located on the hill of the same name, half an hour’s drive. Moreover, it has a cafe shop, souvenir shops and an exhibition venue. Other attractions you might be interested in include an observatory, which contains a museum and a large telescope open to the public. 

Best time to visit Prague

The best visiting months for a Prague City Break are between April – May and September – October. Having a temperate climate, the weather is quite pleasant here with an average temperature of 20°C during summer and 2°C in winter. July and August are the warmest and driest months. If you prefer to visit the capital during winter, you must be prepared for a very cold weather. How to travel in Prague

Prague’s public transportation system is clean, efficient and relatively easy to use. You have the possibility to travel by metro, bus, taxi or you can easily walk around.

The underground (metro) service is covering most of the major attractions in and around the centre. The Prague metro is renowned for its artful design, making it the “most beautiful metro in the world”.
The tram service covers most of the areas and districts. The wide choice of routes and frequent stops make them a convenient choice for many journeys and they are a good way of seeing the city.
The bus service covers only the outlying areas of the city and are not used much by tourists. The exceptions are bus 119 which connects the airport with Nadrazi Veleslavin metro station on line A. Bus 100 connects the airport with Zličín metro station on line B.
By foot is the easiest way to explore the city centre’s old and new neighbourhoods.
