Historical attractions in Paphos
Start your day with the Castle of Paphos because is one of the most famous landmarks of the city. It was originally a Byzantine fort, built to protect the harbour. But after an earthquake in the year 1222, the fort was rebuilt into a castle in the 13th century. Since then it had a few more reconstructions. Above all, these days, it serves as a background for the annual open-air Paphos cultural festival, which takes place in September.
Visit the House of Theseus in the Paphos Archaeological Park. Its name is after the principal mosaic found on the premises, showing Theseus killing the Minotaur. Moreover, it is the largest Roman villa found in Cyprus built in the late 2nd century.
After that, discover the House of Dionysos in the same Paphos Archaeological Park. Firstly, visit and enjoy here multiple ruins representing the island’s rich history. Kato Paphos Archaeological Park was built by the Byzantines to defend the harbour. The Paphos Odeon theatre dates back to the 2nd century. Pay a visit to the Tombs of the Kings. It is one of the most important archaeological sites of Cyprus that is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list since 1980. The monumental underground tombs are carved out of solid rock. They date back to the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Some of the tombs imitate the houses of the living, with the burial chambers opening into another room. They are similar to the tombs found in Alexandria, which demonstrate the close relations between the two cities during the Hellenistic period.
