Historic attractions in Limassol
Limassol Castle is one of the most important monuments of the city . Find it located in the heart of the historical city centre. Is good to know that the history of the castle begins from the Middle Ages up to this day. It was carrying incidents and events of every era, which marked in some ways the city. Now, you will find a museum here, hosting part of the medieval collection of the Cyprus Museum. You can see exhibits that reflect the history and the life on the island, such as weapons, armour, tools, utensils and other valuable items. The Sanctuary of Apollo was once the most significant religious site on the entire island. This is where people from all parts came to worship Apollo as God of the island’s woodland. You can still see large fragments of the sanctuary, including a section of the wall and portico of the temple, stairways or columns. Unfortunately, the temple was destroyed by a severe earthquake around 364-365 AD.
Other attractions in Limassol
The Limassol Carnival also attracts numerous tourists, who are fascinated by the performances given on the streets of the city. The festival takes place at the beginning of the Cypriot spring, from 4 to 10 February. Other festivals that could be interesting for you are the Shakespeare Days and the Greek Theatre Festival.
Kourion Beach is located in the greater Limassol area. It is a 1 km long coast beach that is particularly striking with its natural palette of colours and an ancient history. You have to know that the swimming area has an exceptionally wide shore, comprised of sand and pebbles. The sea water is crystal-clear and has varying shades of blue. If you like windsurfing, it can be practised here. On the other hand, one of the island’s most famous archaeological sites, the ancient Kourion, is close. You can visit its magnificent Greek-Roman amphitheatre where cultural events are still held in our days.
