Cavtat in Croatia is a charming little city located less than 20 km south of Dubrovnik. Firstly, many of the archaeological findings, preserved monuments and historical data go back to ancient Greek beginnings. The city has a rich and interesting historical heritage, beautiful scenery and a wide range of tourist services. Historic attractions in Cavtat
The old town dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and curves around a scenic harbour bordered by pebble beaches. The harbour side promenade with its palm trees offers a pleasant walk but there are a few interesting sights within the town.
The Rector’s Palace with distinct Renaissance characteristics is another interesting building. Apart from its architectural value, it is also the treasury of cultural and historical heritage of Cavtat. The palace is decorated with several masterpieces.
Cavtat Cemetery features fantastic wall sculptures and panoramic views of the pretty town and the beach. Make sure you carry your binoculars and camera for a better view. This cemetery built in Brac stone is one of the masterpieces by Croatian artist Ivan Mestrovic. After that, climb up the hill where you can hike or take the steps. There is also a family mausoleum which is worth a visit. Built entirely in bronze, the interior depict the various stages of human life.
Other attractions in Cavtat
The parish church of St. Nicholas in the east of Cavtat is a Renaissance building from the 15th century. The church interior is in Baroque style. The main altar is the work of well-known Dubrovnik painter Carmello Reggio Palermitano, who lived in Dubrovnik at the end of the 18th. Further, the altar of St. Nicholas is decorated with a large and stylised painting of Cavtat. But Carmello Reggio also made the altar of St. Blasius with a large panorama of Dubrovnik.
Ronald Brown Pathway is a walking rocky zigzag trail which begins from the top of Cavtat. In addition it is overlooking Dubrovnik and the Adriatic Sea. Grab a map and set on this adventure and you will surely be enthralled with the scenic beauty that comes on the way. The trail takes you up a steep climb to the Strazisce peak where the American trade and delegation minister of trade Ronald brown was killed in a plane crash.
Vlaho Bukovac House is a typical bourgeois house from the late 18th and early 19th century. The house, situated in one of the small streets leading from the Cavtat seafront to Prijeko, since ancient times, had the continuity of a living place. During excavation of the land on the northern side of the house, remains were found of a building dating back to the Roman period, with its floor, a large number of bricks, pottery and two pots.
