Beaches of Agios Nikolaos
Ammoudara: This is a nice little sandy beach which is located not far from Agios Nikolaos. It is an organised beach where you can rent umbrellas and sunbeds, but you can also have something to eat and drink. The largest tavern on the beach, “Ammoudara Tavern” is a nice place to stop for lunch when you are on your way. On the other hand, Ammoudara is an option for people that like the town of Agios Nikolaos, but prefer to stay near a beach rather than in the town itself.
Almyros Beach (River Beach): You can find this beach next to Agios Nikolaos. It is very easy to reach by car or bus. From Agios Nikolaos there is also a pleasant footpath. However, this beach is part of the big bay of Mirabello. Therefore it’s well protected from high waves and strong winds. It is particularly suitable for families with small children, as the water is very shallow and calm. Most importantly, the beach is made of fine sand and very clean water. Almyros Beach is one of the cleanest beaches on the island. On the other hand, for the adults, there is a water sports provider, which has a lot to offer you from pedal boat to Jet Ski, but also banana boat.
Kitroplatia beach: You’ll find it in the eastern part of Agios Nikolaos, about 800 meters from city’s main square. Above all, Kitroplatia beach is one of the most cosmopolitan beaches of Agios Nikolaos and has sand and fine gravel. On the other hand, there are various catering businesses near the beach like taverns and cafes. The beach access is quite easy, as it is located into the urban tissue and tourists can arrive there by car, by bicycle, on foot or by public transport.

Archaeology Museum: In Agios Nikolaos you can visit an excellent and very modern Archaeology Museum. Most importantly, it offers an interesting exhibition of objects from several Minoan sites. This vessel is made of clay and dates back to the early Minoan period.

For instance, they base their method of pressing their olive oil on thousands of years of tradition. However, they’ve modernised the technique to make the process more efficient. Certainly, you can visit the farm, shop at their store and learn about how olive oil is produced.
Lake Voulismeni: The lake in the centre of Agios Nikolaos is the most famous landmark for visitors and locals alike. On the other hand, the circular lake of Agios Nikolaos, 137 m in diameter, is the town’s landmark, with many cafés and restaurants set out around it. In short, the lake with its still water, ducks, fishing boats and green slopes is a place which offers you peace and lovely pictures.
