SEASONS
For the majority of the year, the climate in Tarangire is warm and dry. The average daytime temperature does not fluctuate far from 30°C (86°F), and the evenings can cool off to around 10-14°C (50-58°F). The warmest months are December- February, and the coolest are during Tanzania’s ‘winter’ months of June-August, when a raincoat or fleece may be necessary in the early mornings/late evenings.
Total annual rainfall is approximately 725mm (28.5 in), and this is an accumulation of the two rainy seasons. The ‘short rains’ (strong downpours that do not last long) generally occur in November and December, and the ‘long rains’ (misty, cloudy days with heavy rainfall at night) occur in mid-March through the end of May. If you’re interested in dramatic scenery such as dark storm clouds juxtaposed with breathtaking sunsets, and seeing the usual browns of the bush flash to vibrant green… the rainy seasons can be a beautiful time to visit Tarangire National Park. However, the most popular time to visit the park is at the tail-end of the dry season, when wildlife from the surrounding ecosystems come together in large numbers to drink from the Tarangire River, just below our wide-stretched terrace.
