STONE TOWN, SPICE TOUR and PRISON ISLAND
in ZANZIBAR – FULL DAY
STONE TOWN
Take a walk down Zanzibar’s memory lane in the company of a knowledgeable guide. The historical section of Stone Town, called the old town is an acknowledged UNESCO World Heritage. Its narrow streets and most of the houses bordering these are more than one and a half centuries old and stand witness to times bygone.
Stone Town Visit is composed of a series of attention-grabbing visits. Visit the bustling bazaars, the past slave market and chambers, the National museum, the House of Wonders, the Old fort, Sultan’s palace as well as cathedrals and countless mosques. There will be also time to shop for souvenirs and handicrafts to choose from.
SPICE GARDEN
After the abolition of the slave trade, Zanzibar was one of the worlds’ reputed and most important producers of spices. Today, Zanzibar is still well-known for its clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom, chilli and pepper. The Spice Route is a unique opportunity to see and buy them at source.
As you will discover, spices are woven into the very fabric of culture and everyday life in Zanzibar. Their pungent wafts and zingy tastes, organic colours and textures weave magic, tantalising the senses. A visit to a local spice farm to view and learn about the plants and spices still grown here. You will discover coconut and pineapple plantations, and many other local spice trees. Get a chance to taste and savour local tropical fruits straight from the farm.
PRISON ISLAND
You will be taken in a local motorised boat. The island takes its name from the prison that was built there in 1893. At a later stage, the buildings served as a quarantine hospital. Today, only the ruins of the building remain from these days as well as a frangipani lined path around the island where the former patients took their evening walks.
You will have the opportunity to walk around the island & take a stroll through the forested interior. Free time for swimming. Excellent snorkelling around the island. It is your chance to see giant living tortoises imported from the Seychelles. It is also a way to see Stone Town from the water as many old maritime legends would have done!
Timing: Full day excursion (Lunch is not included, but you can get it packed from your chosen accommodation) that normally starts in the morning around 8.30 am and finishes around 5-6 pm in the afternoon, however you will be further communicated the exact time.
