In Arabic the name is thought to come from the words ‘Zayn Z’al Barr’, meaning ‘Fair Is This Land’. There are beautiful beaches in Zanzibar – the beach locations include Nungwi and Kendwa [northern tip of Unguja], Matemwe [mid-south east], Kiwengwa [eastern coast], Paje and Uroa. Fumba Beach lodge situated on one of Zanzibar’s most beautiful and secluded beaches is a luxurious and peaceful hideaway, offering a perfect blend of casual elegance and a friendly, first class service. There are 26 whitewashed Zanzibar style bungalows with their own verandas scattered along the beach ensuring private views of the Indian Ocean. Just 30 minutes southwest of Zanzibar’s historic capital Stone Town, with its magnificent architecture and ancient culture, the Lodge is concealed well away from the busy tourist areas, making it the perfect venue for enjoying the peace and tranquillity of this tropical island paradise. Three naturally formed coves protect the beaches around the lodge and provide seclusion and tranquillity. With the personalised warm service of our Zanzibar staff and the tranquil atmosphere, Fumba Beach Lodge will fulfil all your dreams.
Fumba Beach Lodge is a small scale, peaceful hideaway set on one of Zanzibar’s most secluded beaches. The essence of Fumba Beach Lodge is privacy, space, relaxation, nature and attention to detail. Dream, swim, dive, walk amongst tropical gardens, or have a special romantic occasion in one of the many secluded spots. On the property we’ve created several private decks, veranda’s and little hide aways, to ensure a quiet and private environment for the ultimate romantic holiday.
The lodge is located on a the Fumba Beach peninsula, in the Menai Bay Conservation Area. This is both a large marine haven, and an eco-project. The Fumba peninsula is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty since 1998, by the World Wild Life Federation. Fumba Beach Lodge is a 30-50 minute drive over bumpy track from Zanzibar’s capital, Stone Town or from Zanzibar Airport.
The Lodge is a small scale resort and has 26 en-suite rooms, mostly large en-suite doubles. It offers four luxury suites with bath and outside shower and 2 Baobab suites, cradled in ancient trees with outside bathrooms and direct beach access. Informal, ‘no frills’ accommodation (no TV, no phone and somewhat out-dated air-conditioning and inevitable bug issues) should not deter from the charm of the overall package offered by Fumba Beach Lodge. Rooms are comfortable, and though by some standards this hotel could be seen as needing some modernisation, exotic and large outside bathrooms and beautiful views, accompanied by an overwhelming proximity to nature justify its lack of Western perfection. Bungalows with ocean views are the most popular suites. All of our rooms are privately located within walking distance from the main buildings. All of them have king size double beds, tea/coffee making facilities, mosquito nets, room safes, in room libraries, desks, fans, top-quality bed linen and duvets for the very occasional chilly nights.
Deluxe Rooms
These large, light rooms all have an en suite bathroom, fans, king size beds and a private veranda. 12 of the Deluxe Rooms have a phenomenal view over the ocean, the so called Sea View Deluxe Rooms. In front of these rooms you will find a stretch of beach with sun loungers and hammocks with shade provided by the palm trees and umbrellas. The other 8 Deluxe Rooms have a magnificent view on the lush gardens; these are the Garden View Deluxe Rooms. Some of the Deluxe Rooms are adjoining, which makes them a perfect option for small groups and families with children.
Luxury Suites
The four luxury suites all have an en suite bathroom with a bath, a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired outside shower, overlooking the ocean with direct access to the beach, a private roof terrace and king size beds. A special feature is the private deck with hammock located in front of the rooms.
Baobab Suites
For the ultimate extravagance, spoil yourself in one of the two lodgings cradled around a 900 year old baobab tree. Their complete bathrooms are open to the elements and those two suites have direct access to the beach. The private deck with hammock is a nice feature that offers unlimited, private sunbathing. The Baobab Suites are also known as the Honeymoon Suites.
The reef itself has the most beautiful leaf coral that looks like a rose garden, finger corals, elkhorn coral, table coral, many types of soft corals, mushroom coral, leather coral, sea wips and sea pens, anemones, gorgonian coral, barrel, fan, tube and finger sponges.
If you are here between August and October you may be lucky enough to see a humpback whale breach the water or jump entirely out of the sea! During that time as well you can often hear the humpback whales’ song beneath the surface, a moment you will not forget!
Situated in the south of Zanzibar, Fumba Water Sports is located on the doorstep of the Menai Bay Conservation Area, a pristine section of marine coast protected from damaging commercial fishing practises. The Bay is surrounded by various secluded coral atoll islands and is home to Ukombe Reef, a vibrant collision of hard and soft corals spanning 8 k in length. Thousands of marine-life species fill the crystal clear waters and depending on the season you could see Clown Fish, Bluespotted Sting Rays, Africana Nudibranchs, Moray Eels, Bottlenose Dolphins and Humpback Whales all in one trip.
At Fumba Water Sports we offer a variety of services and can cater all services to your specific interests and needs. Our staff are friendly and trained to the highest Padi standards. We are using only the best ingredients which flourish under the African sun, such as: fresh herbs, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, cauliflower, eggplant, zucchini and carrots, and the most sun ripened succulent tomatoes you have ever tasted. Here on the Fumba Peninsula we have some of the most fertile soils on Zanzibar, giving us the most amazing, sweet, ripe tropical fruits: mangos, bananas, coconuts, jackfruits, passion fruit, and oranges. Right on our doorstep from the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, our neighbours, the fisherman catch the most succulent tunas, snappers, barracuda’s, lobsters, prawns, and crabs. All of this fresh produce and seafood is delivered to us on a daily basis, and has been for many years now.
Always with a smile and a song our chefs start early in the morning chopping, grilling, baking, and cooking. Throughout the day, despite the searing heat of Africa, they provide us with one of the best meals on the island. Zanzibar is synonymous with spices, brought to us by the wonderful women of Fumba Village who use them in their local dishes. Initially they showed us how to cook with spices and gave us inspiration for the mixture of African and Mediterranean cuisine that we provide, and in the process, gave us a respect for the ingredients.
The resort boasts both a spa and a pool, as with all of Western Zanzibar it is difficult to swim in the sea at low tide. The spa area is small, but pleasant and the massage and Jacuzzi come highly recommended. The pool is well suited to the size of the accommodation and is in good condition. The onsite dive centre offers diving, dive courses and snorkelling.
At Fumba we have our own spa and massage center, nestled between lush landscapes and protected by a majestic baobab tree. The ‘Baobab spa’ is designed to create an atmosphere of relaxation and tranquillity while you’re pampered. The spa offers a wide range of services, from massages and body scrubs to facials and pedicures. We even offer romantic spa dinners with exclusive use of our Jacuzzi which is built on the baobab tree.

- De-stress Back and Neck Massage
- Deep Tissue Full Body Massage
- Full Body Holistic Massage
