WELCOME TO CHAKA CAMP, NDUTU AREA
From December through March, the wildebeest migration moves in and out of the Ndutu area. Ndutu is located in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just south of Serengeti National Park. Chaka Camp’s location provides easy access to prime game viewing areas around Lakes Ndutu and Masek. In addition to the almost two million wildebeest and zebra that move through the area each year, Ndutu is home to cheetah, lion, giraffe and hundreds of bird species. During February’s calving season, the wildebeest give birth to 8,000 babies a day.
Chaka Camp, designed to be lightweight enough to move seasonally, is located in the Ndutu area from December through March and Northern Serengeti from late May through October.
Ndutu (December 1 – April 5): 3°00’00.0″S 34°57’51.0″E
Kogatende (May 20 – November 10): 1°34’55″S 34°50’31″E
From late May through October, Chaka Camp is located in Northern Serengeti. The camp is close to the Mara River, allowing easy access to several river crossing points in the area. During this time of year, the wildebeest migration is crossing the Mara River back and forth from Tanzania to Kenya. River crossings are common with crocodiles, hippos and large cats scattered throughout the area.

ECO-FRIENDLY
Chaka Camp operates off-the-grid and relies on a custom-built solar system for its power. Room fabrics are hand woven African designs, and the camp’s furniture was commissioned and crafted by artisans in Arusha, Tanzania. Hard plastics and tin are brought back to Arusha for recycling, and rain water is collected in Chaka’s staff areas. In Arusha, we have our very own garden of organically grown herbs, fruits and vegetables which we use to supply the camp. Chaka’s management team is involved in local tree planting projects to help offset the camp’s carbon footprint and has planted more than 2000 indigenous trees in the last two years around the Arusha area.
TEMPERATURES AND CLIMATE
Just south of the equator, Tanzania’s climate is fairly constant year-round. Tanzania has a light rain season known as the ‘short rains’ from November to February. The ‘long rains’ generally occur between mid-March and mid-May.
